Wiegand Protocol — Wiegand Communication Standard

  • Communication Standard - A wired communication standard used to transmit card and credential data between a card reader and an access control panel. Data is sent as pulses across dedicated wires — typically three wires (ground, data0, data1) — making it simple, reliable, and cost-effective for installers.
  • Why installers care - Installers need to ensure their card readers support Wiegand output if the panel uses Wiegand input. Mismatched protocols mean the reader and panel will not communicate — the system will not work.
  • Common searches - Wiegand reader · Wiegand wiring guide · Wiegand compatible panel · Wiegand 26-bit · Wiegand vs OSDP
  • Mainline stocks - Wiegand-compatible card readers from HID, ZKTeco, and Dahua — ready for integration with most major access control panels.

PoE — Power over Ethernet

  • Power & Network Technology - A technology that delivers both electrical power and network data through a single Ethernet cable. PoEenabled devices such as IP cameras, access readers, and intercoms draw power directly from the network — eliminating the need for separate power supplies at each device.
  • Why installers care - Installers need to verify their network switch supports PoE before specifying an IP camera or reader installation. This is critical for job site planning — PoE eliminates separate power cable runs to each device location.
  • Common searches - PoE switch for Dahua NVR · PoE injector · PoE power budget · PoE compatible camera· PoE switch Australia
  • Mainline stocks - PoE switches, PoE injectors, and PoE-compatible IP cameras and readers from Dahua and other major brands.

PIR — Passive Infrared Sensor

  • Detection Technology - A motion detection sensor that detects changes in infrared heat signatures (body heat). When a person moves across the field of view, the PIR detects the temperature change and triggers an alarm or event. Called passive because it does not emit anything — it only receives infrared radiation.
  • Why installers care - Installers need to understand PIR sensitivity, coverage patterns, and placement to avoid false alarms and ensure proper detection. PIR sensors are the core component in most motion detectors.
  • Common searches - PIR motion sensor · PIR false alarms · PIR detector installation · PIR vs dual-tech sensor · outdoor PIR detector
  • Mainline stocks - PIR motion detectors from leading brands — indoor, outdoor, and ceiling-mount options for residential, commercial, and industrial applications.

TIOC — True Integrated Operational Centre

  • Integrated Solutions - Dahua's all-in-one surveillance solution combining a full-colour camera, active deterrence (built-in strobes and sirens), and AI-powered smart detection in a single unit. Designed for perimeter security, parking lots, warehouses, and outdoor spaces requiring immediate threat response.
  • Why installers care - TIOC replaces the need for separate cameras, alarm devices, and lighting. Installers specifying TIOC need to understand power requirements, wiring options, and integration with existing Dahua systems.
  • Common searches - Dahua TIOC camera · TIOC active deterrence · TIOC Australia · TIOC installation guide · Dahua TIOC specifications
  • Mainline stocks - Dahua TIOC cameras and all complementary components. As a Dahua authorised distributor, Mainline provides expert support on TIOC system design and integration.

Mifare — NXP Mifare Smart Card Technology

  • Access Credentials - A contactless smart card technology developed by NXP Semiconductors. Mifare cards use RFID — users tap or wave the card near a reader to authenticate. No physical contact required. Widely used in access control for its affordability, durability, and widespread compatibility.
  • Why installers care - Specifying Mifare-compatible readers ensures affordable, reliable credentials and minimises compatibility issues. Mifare is the industry standard for new access control installations.
  • Common searches - Mifare card reader · Mifare compatible panel · Mifare vs HID card · Mifare programming · Mifare 13.56MHz
  • Mainline stocks - Mifare-compatible card readers and blank Mifare cards and fobs from HID, ZKTeco, and Dahua.

RS-485 — Recommended Standard 485

  • Communication Standard - A serial communication standard that transmits data over long distances (up to 1,200 metres) using twistedpair shielded cable. Supports multiple devices on the same cable run — many readers, keypads, or controllers can share a single communication line.
  • Why installers care - RS-485 lets installers run a single cable to multiple access control devices across a large facility instead of separate wires to each device. Significantly reduces installation complexity and cost on large jobs.
  • Common searches - RS-485 wiring guide · RS-485 reader · RS-485 multi-drop · RS-485 termination · RS485 cable distance
  • Mainline stocks - RS-485-compatible access control readers, keypads, and controllers. Also carries the shielded twisted-pair cabling and termination resistors needed for proper RS-485 setup.
